Buckinghamshire Council is carrying out a full inspection and survey of Marlow Bridge over the next two weeks to establish what the planned maintenance and improvement works this year should cover.
The council has programmed maintenance and upgrade works to the grade I listed bridge during this year and next. Starting next Monday (13 May), a fortnight of surveying and inspections will ascertain exactly what works are needed on the structure.
From Monday 13 May, scaffolding will be installed around both bridge towers to allow engineers to fully access these structures. It means motorists won’t be able to cross the bridge between 8pm and 6am while the scaffolding is installed. The same overnight closures will be in place when the scaffolding is dismantled once the inspection is complete. Drivers will need to follow a signed diversion route but pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use the bridge following the signed instructions on site.
Dominic Barnes is Buckinghamshire Council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Transport. He said:
“As we’ve previously said, we’ve got maintenance and upgrade works planned in for Marlow Bridge during this year and next, and this initial surveying will tell us exactly what’s needed and will allow us to fully plan these works in.
We’re committed to protecting and enhancing this historic and attractive structure and this will help us to move our maintenance and improvements work forward. We would remind motorists to observe the diversions that will be put in place and thank people for their patience while we carry out these works; we will be aiming to keep disruption to a minimum”.
