Role Of Mayor – Cllr Muryel Boulay
The Mayor is the First Citizen of Marlow, giving precedence only to Royalty and the Queen’s representative (Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire or his Deputy Lieutenant). As First Citizen, the Mayor acts as a focal point, particularly in times of crisis, celebration or tragedy.
Being Mayor of Marlow is a demanding role with upwards of over 100 engagements per year on average. Engagements are principally undertaken by the Mayor, but the Deputy Mayor and Past town Mayors attend a number of events on behalf of the Mayor, particularly at busy times.
The Mayor can use his/her position to stimulate community pride and promote the voluntary sector. The Mayor is also the symbol of an open society as historically the position of Mayor was once only open to the privileged few but the Mayor now reflects the diversity of the more open and democratic society and can come from any class, gender or ethnic background.
The Mayor is in the public spotlight more than any other person in the Council. As the role is non-political, the Mayor can often reach places and people that other politicians may not be able to and therefore has an important role in representing the Council and the residents of Marlow
Each year the Mayor selects a charity to support , as highlighted below,

The Mayor’s Charity
The Mayor of Marlow Town Council is pleased to announce she has chosen to support Wild Marlow and Brighter Futures Together. Each year, the Mayor selects local causes to support, helping to raise awareness and vital funds. This year’s chosen organisations reflect a strong commitment to both environmental sustainability and the wellbeing of young people. Together, they support the present and future of Marlow’s community, nurturing the young and protecting the environment they call home.
Wild Marlow is a volunteer-run community group working to protect wildlife and biodiversity in the Marlow area. Relying solely on donations, memberships, and grants, the group promotes conservation through education, practical action, and community engagement. Brighter Futures Together is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company and social enterprise supporting youth mental health across the Thames Valley. All profits go directly into delivering projects and services that build resilience and wellbeing in young people.
The Mayor says “I’m delighted to support these two inspiring organisations. Both make a real difference in our community, and I look forward to highlighting their incredible work over the coming year.”
Fundraising initiatives will be held throughout the year to benefit both organisations, and local residents and businesses are encouraged to get involved.
